A 15-year-old student who shot a teacher at Hill Country College Preparatory High School in Texas before killing himself had been dealing with academic struggles, according to investigators examining what led up to the shooting. Authorities said the teacher was still hospitalized as of Tuesday, while detectives continued working to establish a clearer motive behind the attack. 

Law enforcement said the student brought a .357 revolver from home and used it during the shooting on campus in Bulverde, about 27 miles north of San Antonio. Investigators later carried out a search warrant at the home and seized multiple electronic devices, which are now undergoing forensic review in an attempt to better understand the student’s actions and state of mind.

Authorities have not publicly identified the student or the teacher, and they have not yet said exactly what triggered the shooting. What they have said is that the student appeared to have been struggling in school, including failing several classes, a detail that has become one part of a still-developing investigation. Sheriff Mark Reynolds has also said investigators are looking into whether the student was currently taught by the teacher who was shot. 

The shooting forced an immediate lockdown and sent the campus community into crisis mode. Students were evacuated and reunited with their families, while the district moved quickly to suspend classes and expand counseling support. In a public message, Comal ISD urged the community to rally around the injured teacher and her family, with Superintendent John E. Chapman III asking people to wear blue as a show of support.

For the district, the incident has become one of those moments that instantly changes the mood of an entire school year. Hill Country College Prep has been recognized in recent years for strong academic performance, which only deepens the shock around an attack that unfolded inside a campus built around achievement and preparation. 

The investigation remains active, and officials are still piecing together the timeline, the motive, and any warning signs that may have surfaced beforehand. For now, the focus is split between evidence gathering and community recovery, with students, staff, and families left trying to process a loss that no campus ever expects to face.
