The family of Erik and Lyle Menendez is set to meet with Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman on Friday to advocate for a reduced sentence for the brothers, who are serving life without parole for the 1989 murders of their parents.

Over 20 relatives will attend, backing the Justice for Erik and Lyle Coalition’s plea for resentencing that considers the brothers’ claims of abuse, trauma, and their rehabilitation during 35 years of incarceration. The coalition released a statement highlighting the brothers’ personal growth and their positive contributions behind bars.

Erik and Lyle were convicted of first-degree murder in 1996, following two trials. The brothers admitted to killing their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, at their Beverly Hills home, citing years of severe sexual abuse by their father—a claim prosecutors dismissed as a fabrication to cover a motive of financial gain.

Their trials captivated the nation, becoming media sensations and sparking numerous dramatizations and true crime documentaries, including recent Netflix productions.

The coalition expressed hope for an “open and fair discussion” with DA Hochman. “We look forward to sharing Erik and Lyle’s immense personal growth and how we plan to support them in their next chapters,” the statement read. They added that the meeting is a step toward reuniting the family next Christmas.
