On Wednesday, Capitol Police arrested a man carrying a machete and three knives during a security screening at the Capitol Visitor Center. The weapons were discovered in the man’s bag as it passed through an X-ray machine, prompting officers to temporarily halt screenings on the north side of the center for further investigation.

er President Jimmy Carter, who lies in state at the Capitol through Thursday morning. Carter’s casket was brought to the Capitol on Tuesday, and a memorial service will follow at Washington National Cathedral.

President-elect Donald Trump is expected to visit the Capitol to honor Carter and meet with Senate Republicans. This will be Trump’s first appearance at the Capitol since the January 6, 2021, attack, adding a layer of significance to the day’s events.

Security incidents at the Capitol Visitor Center have become a recurring concern. In November, Capitol Police arrested a man carrying a flare gun, torch lighter, and fuel bottles. Earlier, another individual was apprehended while attempting to enter the building with a hammer.

As security threats persist, the Capitol remains under heightened vigilance. Officers have increased patrols, coordinated with other agencies, and reinforced the area with fencing, especially ahead of major events like the certification of Trump’s electoral victory and his upcoming inauguration on January 20.
