Karen Huger, star of Real Housewives of Potomac, was sentenced to a year in jail on Wednesday, nearly a year after crashing her Maserati while intoxicated. The 61-year-old reality star, known as the “grande dame” of Potomac high society, was convicted of DUI and related charges but was acquitted of reckless driving.

Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Terrence McGann sentenced Huger to two years, suspending one, along with $2,900 in fines and five years of probation. She is prohibited from driving for a year after release and could face additional jail time if she violates probation. She was remanded into custody immediately.

Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy emphasized that Huger’s case was handled like any other DUI, stating, “We prosecute thousands of D.U.I. cases every year and take them seriously. We encourage the public to always drive sober.” Representatives for Bravo and RHOP executive producer Andy Cohen declined to comment.

In court, Huger took responsibility, acknowledging how fortunate she was that no one was hurt. “Drinking responsibly, especially while taking medications, means not drinking at all,” she said. “I failed at that miserably. Thank god I did not hit a pedestrian.”

Prosecutors, citing her history of three alcohol-related traffic incidents between 2006 and 2011, pushed for six months in jail, while her defense sought rehabilitation instead of incarceration. Body camera footage from the crash scene showed Huger struggling with balance and slurring her speech.

Huger did not appear on the latest RHOP reunion episodes but addressed her absence in a pre-taped video, revealing she had checked into rehab to address alcohol and antidepressant use.
