Three people were killed and three others injured in a shooting Tuesday evening in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, roughly 60 miles south of Washington, D.C., according to authorities. No suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made.

Maj. Elizabeth Scott of the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office described the scene as an “active shooter situation” and urged residents to avoid the area. “We’re asking the public to please stay clear of the area, let the investigators do their job,” she said. Residents were also advised to stay indoors.

Fredericksburg public schools will open two hours late Wednesday to allow staff time to prepare support services for students and faculty, the district announced.

Police are investigating a Tuesday shooting near Old Greenwich Circle in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

It remains unclear whether individuals seen being questioned at the scene were suspects. “This is about as bad as it can get with six people shot right now,” Scott said during a news conference.

Sheriff Roger L. Harris said deputies responded to a report of gunfire around 5:30 p.m. in the Old Greenwich Circle area. “Upon arrival, deputies found multiple subjects shot,” Harris said in a statement. Victims were taken to the hospital, but their conditions and ages have not been released.

Local investigators, Virginia State Police, and Fredericksburg police are working to identify the suspects and determine a motive.
