Jonathan Joss, the actor who gave voice to John Redcorn in the animated series King of the Hill, was killed in a shooting Sunday evening in San Antonio, according to police.

Officers arrived on Dorsey Drive around 7 p.m. and found Joss — legally named Jonathan Joss Gonzales — lying near the roadway with a gunshot wound. Paramedics attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 59.

Police arrested 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, who was taken into custody and charged with murder, the San Antonio Police Department confirmed.

Joss was best known for voicing John Redcorn, a New Age healer and massage therapist who appeared throughout seasons 2 to 13 of the Fox series. The character was often addressed formally as “Mr. Redcorn,” and became a staple in the show’s fictional town of Arlen.

A revival of King of the Hill is set to premiere on Hulu this August. In a preview released last week, John Redcorn makes a cameo, driving his familiar tan Jeep through the neighborhood.

Outside animation, Joss had several notable roles, including Ken Hotate in Parks and Recreation, appearances in Tulsa King, and a role in the 2016 remake of The Magnificent Seven.

His most recent credit came in 2023, when he voiced a character in the video game Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

Earlier this year, Joss lost his home in a fire that also killed three of his dogs. According to an online fundraiser, more than $10,000 was raised to support him following the tragedy. At the time, Joss had told local media he was unemployed.

Attempts to reach his family or representatives for comment have not been successful.
