Ruby Franke’s Sentencing

Former internet sensations Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt faced sentencing in Washington County after pleading guilty to multiple counts of child abuse in 2023.

Ruby Franke, appearing first, received four 1-15-year prison terms, one for each count of child abuse to which she pleaded guilty in December. These terms will be served consecutively per her plea agreement.

During the sentencing, Franke’s lawyer, LaMar Winward, spoke on her behalf, emphasizing her expressions of remorse while in custody. Franke, tearful, delivered a prepared statement, expressing accountability and seeking mercy.

Franke expressed deep sorrow to her family for the harm caused and thanked law enforcement and medical professionals for their work.

Jodi Hildebrandt’s Sentencing

Jodi Hildebrandt, receiving the same sentence as Franke, faced similar charges and consequences.

Hildebrandt, along with her lawyer Douglas Terry, addressed the court, with Terry highlighting his client’s recognition of the harm caused to the children.

Despite Hildebrandt’s tearful expression of love for the children and desire for their healing, the prosecution deemed her a risk to the community due to her lack of remorse.

Sentencing Considerations and Remarks

The judge noted the disastrous impact of Hildebrandt’s conduct, particularly given her specialized training as a therapist.

District Attorney Eric Clarke criticized Hildebrandt’s lack of remorse and labeled the case as one of the worst instances of child abuse he had encountered.

Clarke highlighted religious extremism as a contributing factor and emphasized the need for Hildebrandt to serve more time in prison.

Both Franke and Hildebrandt pleaded guilty to aggravated child abuse charges, admitting to severe mistreatment of Franke’s children.

Aftermath and Sentencing Process

The sentencing concludes a period of legal proceedings following Franke and Hildebrandt’s arrests in August.

Victims and defendants were given opportunities to speak before sentencing, with Franke expressing deep remorse and gratitude to law enforcement and medical professionals.

The exact duration of their prison terms will be determined by the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole, considering various factors including sentencing guidelines and behavior in prison.
