New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers expressed a preference to stay with the team if he chooses to play next season but has not committed to returning in 2025.

Speaking on ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, the 40-year-old addressed speculation about his future, stating, “I haven’t told anybody in my life that I want to play in 2025 and not on the Jets.” He emphasized his loyalty to the team, adding, “I’m not jumping off ship. … I don’t even know if I want to play yet, but New York would be my first option.”

Rodgers’ uncertain future has fueled rumors, particularly amid a difficult season for both the veteran quarterback and the Jets. The three-time MVP is posting career lows in yards per attempt and has his worst passer rating since becoming a starter in 2008. Meanwhile, the Jets, currently 3-8, have lost seven of their last eight games.

Recent reports have added to the intrigue. On Nov. 23, The Athletic’s Diana Russini suggested Rodgers wants to play in 2025 but not necessarily with the Jets. Rodgers, however, indicated that his decision will partly depend on the coaching staff and front office leadership next season.

The Jets have seen significant changes in management recently, including the firing of head coach Robert Saleh in October and general manager Joe Douglas earlier this month.

Rodgers, acquired by New York in 2023, has faced challenges during his time with the franchise. A torn Achilles sidelined him after just four snaps last season. He also missed a mandatory June practice, resulting in a fine, and this season the Jets sit 12th in the AFC standings.

Financially, Rodgers’ $23.5 million salary for 2025 weighs heavily on the Jets. Cutting or trading him after the season would carry a $25.5 million cap hit, while a post-June 1 transaction would save the team $9.5 million.

The Jets face the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday as they look to salvage a tough season.
