Filmmaker Michael Mann was hospitalized after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range, according to a Page Six report published Sunday. The 83-year-old director was attempting to holster a firearm when it went off around 4 p.m. Saturday at The Range LA, sources told TMZ.

Paramedics transported Mann to a hospital by ambulance. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to Page Six that the victim was taking part in firearm training when he accidentally discharged his gun.

Accidentally Shooting Himself: What the Report Says

A representative for Mann told Page Six on Sunday that the injury was “superficial” and that he was expected to be released from the hospital soon. That update offered the clearest account of his condition in the report.

The incident happened at The Range LA, a members-only shooting club on the Westside of Los Angeles. The club describes itself as serving serious enthusiasts, collectors and beginners. Mann was trying to put away the firearm when it discharged, according to sources cited by TMZ.

An insider told Page Six that Mann has practiced target shooting for decades. The source did not describe what led to the discharge, and the report provided no further details about the training session.

A Career Spanning Heat and The Insider

Mann has directed films since starting in Hollywood in the 1960s. His 1995 crime action film “Heat” starred Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer. The story follows Los Angeles police detectives and a master criminal.

He reunited with Pacino for “The Insider,” a 1999 thriller nominated for a Golden Globe. The film centers on Jeffrey Wigand, a tobacco industry whistleblower, and also stars Russell Crowe and Christopher Plummer.

Another well-known Mann film is “Collateral,” the 2004 thriller starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx. Mann also recently produced “Ferrari,” a 2003 drama starring Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz and Shailene Woodley. The report describes the film as award-winning.

Heat 2 Is in Production

Mann is in the production phase of “Heat 2,” which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale. The forthcoming project is based on the 2022 crime novel by Meg Gardiner, according to the report.

Pacino and De Niro are rumored to appear in the production. Filming is allegedly set to begin in January. Those details remain attributed to the report, which does not describe them as confirmed casting or a finalized schedule.

The report also says Mann married movie art director Summer Man in 1974, and that they have four children. It does not connect those family details to the gun-range incident.

The available account says Mann was expected to leave the hospital soon after a superficial injury. No further medical update or additional information about the firearm discharge was included.
