Adam Driver reacts to the planned Girls revival with a clear decision: he will not return to the HBO series. Asked by CinemaBlend whether he would reprise his role, Driver replied, “Nope, but I wish them the best of luck.”

The brief answer settles one question left open after HBO announced the revival. Driver played Adam Sackler, the on-again, off-again boyfriend of Lena Dunham’s character, Hannah Horvath, throughout the show’s six-season run.

Adam Driver reacts as Girls revival moves ahead

HBO announced last month that Girls would return for a limited five-episode revival. Production is set to begin next year. Dunham is confirmed to return as Hannah, alongside Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells.

Those actors are expected to reprise their roles as Marnie, Jessa, Shoshanna and Elijah, respectively. Driver was absent from the group announcement, which prompted questions from fans. His answer now confirms that Adam Sackler will not be part of the returning cast.

Driver’s role connected him closely to the central story of Girls. He played Hannah’s boyfriend across the series, which ran from 2012 to 2017. The revival will bring back several of the show’s principal performers, but Driver’s statement makes his own plans explicit.

Memoir claims preceded Driver’s decision

The decision comes seven months after Dunham published her memoir, Famesick. In the book, she described Driver as “spectacularly rude” to her during filming and alleged that he threw a chair against a wall near her, punched a hole in his trailer wall and frequently screamed in her face.

Those are Dunham’s allegations, as described in her memoir. She also discussed the experience in an interview with The Guardian published around the memoir’s release in April. Dunham said she had not yet developed the ability to tell him, “I am your boss, you can’t speak to me this way.”

Dunham created Girls, starred in it and wrote and directed several episodes. In her account, she said that at the time she thought this was how “great male geniuses” behaved, while adding that her father, painter Carroll Dunham, would never treat her that way. She also praised the “amazing men” in her life, including executive producer Judd Apatow, whom she called a “great hero of mine.”

Driver declines to address the memoir claims

Driver appeared to sidestep questions about Dunham’s allegations during a press conference for his film Paper Tiger. He joked, “I have no comment on any of that. I’m saving it all for my book.” The source does not report that he offered a further response to the claims.

The contrast between the revival announcement and Driver’s remarks has kept attention on the returning cast. For a related look at performers discussing their work and careers, readers can revisit Naomi Ackie’s Star Wars experience. Other celebrity coverage includes Ellen DeGeneres remembering producer Matthew Wright and Erin Foster’s response to Adam Brody.

HBO’s five-episode revival is scheduled to begin production next year, with Dunham and the named returning cast members attached. Driver’s answer leaves his role out of that plan and gives fans a direct update on his participation.
