Actor Alec Baldwin has filed a civil lawsuit in New Mexico, accusing prosecutors and investigators of malicious prosecution and civil rights violations after the dismissal of an involuntary manslaughter charge related to the fatal 2021 Rust set shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Baldwin alleges that officials intentionally mishandled evidence, defamed him, and targeted him for personal and political gain.

The lawsuit names special prosecutor Kari Morrissey, Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, and three investigators, among others. It seeks punitive damages, compensatory damages, and attorneys’ fees. Baldwin claims prosecutors disregarded key evidence, including ammunition linked to the case, which was allegedly mishandled by investigators.

Hutchins died in October 2021 when Baldwin, pointing a pistol during rehearsal, discharged the weapon, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza. Baldwin maintains he pulled back the hammer but did not pull the trigger.

This lawsuit follows the conviction of weapons supervisor Hannah Gutierrez-Reed for involuntary manslaughter in a separate trial. Meanwhile, Baldwin faces ongoing lawsuits, including from Hutchins’ parents and sister, though a settlement has been reached with her widower and son.

Baldwin, who has returned to public appearances, including Saturday Night Live and plans for a family reality TV show, remains at the center of post-trial litigation surrounding the tragic shooting.
