Angela Simmons issued an apology for carrying a gun-shaped purse to the 2024 BET Awards, citing her personal experience with gun violence.

At the event, Simmons, daughter of Run-DMC founder Joseph Simmons (Rev. Run), accessorized her outfit with a green, gun-shaped clutch, sparking social media backlash. She responded with an apology on Instagram, acknowledging her “poor decision” and describing the purse as inappropriate and insensitive given her history with gun violence.

Simmons’ former partner, Sutton Tennyson, was fatally shot in Atlanta in 2018, as People reported. She emphasized her commitment to peace and the resolution of gun violence, stressing that her choice of accessory did not reflect her stance on the issue.

Expressing regret, Simmons reiterated her dedication to ending gun violence and apologized to those offended by her actions. She pledged to continue her work through her foundation, Angela’s Angels, which creates programs to reduce gun violence and support affected individuals.
