Ava Kris Tyson, a longtime friend and collaborator of YouTube star Jimmy Donaldson (MrBeast), announced her departure from the channel following accusations of “grooming” by online commentators.

Tyson, who frequently appeared on the MrBeast channel known for its challenges and giveaways, faced criticism for her online relationship with a minor, starting when the person was 13 and Tyson was 20. This controversy arose after a video analyzing their interactions gained traction on YouTube.

Commentators scrutinized posts between Tyson and the minor, known online as LavaGS, on X and Discord. These posts included references to nude photos and anime pornography. NBC News could not independently verify the posts, which were removed by Wednesday.

Social media users labeled the posts as evidence of “grooming,” which the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children defines as manipulating and exploiting a child. Conservatives have used the term “groomer” against the LGBTQ community in recent years.

In a post on X, Tyson denied the allegations but apologized to her followers, stating, “It was not my intent,” and announced her decision to step away from the MrBeast channel and social media to focus on her family and mental health.

LavaGS, now 20, rebutted the grooming claims on X, calling them “massive lies” and defending Tyson. He stated that their interactions occurred in public forums and were being misrepresented.

A representative for Tyson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Tyson also posted an apology on X, directing people to LavaGS’ posts and emphasizing that her past behavior was misunderstood.

Despite the defenses from Tyson and LavaGS, many online users believe the sexual references in Tyson’s interactions with a minor were inappropriate. Some argue that adult content creators should not engage in explicit conversations with minors due to the power imbalance.

Amid the criticism, Tyson has faced misgendering and anti-LGBTQ harassment, while LavaGS has been accused of being “paid off.” MrBeast has not publicly commented on Tyson’s departure or the allegations. A representative for MrBeast did not respond to a request for comment.
