Legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick, who guided the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, has been named the next head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels, the university announced Wednesday. The five-year contract is pending approval by the University’s Board of Trustees and Board of Governors.

Belichick, 72, boasts a remarkable career that includes 333 NFL wins, the second-most in league history. In addition to his Super Bowl triumphs with the Patriots (2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2016, 2018), he also won two championships as the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator in 1987 and 1990. The Patriots and Belichick mutually parted ways in January after 23 seasons.

In a statement, Belichick expressed enthusiasm for the new role. “I am excited for the opportunity at UNC-Chapel Hill,” he said. “I grew up around college football with my dad and have always wanted to coach in college. I look forward to building the football program in Chapel Hill.”

UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham highlighted the significance of the hire. “Bill Belichick is a football legend,” Cunningham said. “Hiring him represents a new approach to ensure Carolina football can evolve, compete, and win. At Carolina, we prioritize providing championship opportunities and an unparalleled experience for our student-athletes, and Coach Belichick shares that vision.”

Belichick succeeds Mack Brown, who was dismissed on Nov. 26 after compiling a 43-33 record over six seasons in his second stint with the Tar Heels. Despite leading the team to one bowl victory, Brown’s tenure did not end UNC’s four-decade conference title drought; their last ACC championship came in 1980.

This marks Belichick’s first foray into college coaching. His NFL journey began in 1975 as an assistant with the Baltimore Colts. He later worked with the Lions, Broncos, and Giants, where he earned two Super Bowl rings under head coach Bill Parcells. Belichick served as head coach of the Cleveland Browns (1991-1995) before joining the Patriots in 2000, a decision that famously followed his resignation as Jets head coach just before his introductory press conference.

While Belichick’s tenure with the Patriots brought unparalleled success, his relationship with team owner Robert Kraft reportedly soured in 2020, especially after the departure of star quarterback Tom Brady. Without Brady, Belichick struggled in his final four seasons, going 29-38 with one playoff appearance.

Earlier this year, Belichick interviewed for the Atlanta Falcons’ head coaching job, which ultimately went to Raheem Morris.

UNC is betting that Belichick’s storied NFL career and leadership can elevate a football program hungry for championship success.
