Billy Joel has officially canceled his upcoming concerts after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a neurological disorder that has recently intensified due to live performances. The announcement came Friday through a statement shared across his social media platforms.

According to the message, the condition has led to symptoms affecting his hearing, vision, and balance. The 76-year-old performer is currently receiving targeted physical therapy under medical supervision. His doctors have advised a complete pause in performances while he focuses on recovery. The statement emphasized Joel’s gratitude for the care he’s receiving and his full commitment to prioritizing his health during this time.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) occurs when cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain, causing increased pressure. The Cleveland Clinic notes that NPH mostly affects individuals over 65, as aging naturally leads to reduced brain volume, allowing fluid to occupy more space. Dr. Wajd Al-Holou, a neurosurgeon at University of Michigan Health, explains that symptoms can resemble dementia but may be reversible if caught early. Common signs include walking difficulties, memory lapses, and incontinence.

Billy Joel expressed remorse over the tour cancellation, stating, “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.” The list of affected performances is available here.

This isn’t the first time the “Piano Man” singer has had to reschedule due to health concerns. Back in March, he delayed a tour by four months citing a “medical condition,” without revealing specifics. Earlier, in February, Joel had an on-stage fall during a show in Uncasville, Connecticut. A TikTok video captured the moment he tossed his microphone and stand toward the crowd before stumbling and collapsing onto his side. He lay briefly on his back before attempting to rise on his own.
