An elderly cat has survived a nearly 400-foot fall that killed her two owners at Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, authorities confirmed last week. On April 29, the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office reported the bodies of Matthew Nannen, 45, and Bailee Crane, 58, were found by visitors roughly 380 feet below the lookout at Inspiration Point. Investigators believe the couple fell between April 28 and 29 after climbing over a safety railing that separates the trail from the cliff’s edge. The cause of the fall remains unclear.

Mirage endured a deadly plunge at Bryce Canyon that claimed the lives of her owners.

The sheriff’s office said the couple appeared to be living out of a U-Haul and had recently arrived in Utah after spending considerable time in Arizona. Their last known residence was in Florida.

Astonishingly, the couple’s 12-year-old cat was found alive in a soft-sided pet carrier near the site. Now named Mirage, the cat was rescued by Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, where staff discovered she had fractured ribs, was matted and sore, and coated in mud and dirt. Despite her injuries, Mirage is recovering well.

“She’s eating and drinking on her own, and with steady attention from the veterinary team, she’s getting the care she needs. She’s expected to make a full recovery,” the sanctuary said in its statement. Judah Battista, chief sanctuary officer at Best Friends, called Mirage’s survival “remarkable” and described her as “a very sweet girl and doing very well.”

While the tragic fall remains under investigation, the survival of Mirage has brought a glimmer of hope and compassion in the aftermath. The sanctuary continues to care for her as she recovers from the ordeal.
