The Chicago Bears have fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron after a disappointing start to the season. The announcement came shortly after head coach Matt Eberflus hinted at potential changes, stating that the team would be making necessary adjustments.

Eberflus explained that moving on from Waldron was “in the best interest of our team” and expressed gratitude for his contributions. Thomas Brown, currently the passing game coordinator, will step into the role as offensive coordinator. Eberflus praised Brown’s “collaborative mindset” and experience, adding that he looks forward to Brown’s leadership.

Waldron, who joined the Bears from the Seattle Seahawks, faced criticism for the Bears’ lackluster offensive performance, with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams struggling to connect on plays. The Bears have lost three consecutive games and failed to score an offensive touchdown in the last two, marking their worst offensive stretch since 2004.

The team is currently 4-5 and facing the toughest remaining schedule in the NFL. The Bears have allowed six or more sacks in their last two games—a feat not seen in over three decades. Williams, who excelled earlier in the season, hasn’t thrown a touchdown since Week 6 and has been sacked 18 times in recent games, contributing to the Bears’ rank as the NFL’s third-worst offense in terms of yardage.

This midseason firing is rare for the Bears, who haven’t dismissed an offensive coordinator midseason since 1970, despite changing offensive coordinators frequently in the last decade.
