The Cincinnati Bengals have placed the franchise tag on star receiver Tee Higgins for the second straight year, ensuring he remains with the team for the 2025 season. This move delays negotiations on the long-term extension Higgins has been seeking, setting him up for a $26.2 million salary if no deal is reached by July.

Higgins, who had 73 receptions for 911 yards and 10 touchdowns in just 12 games last season, would have been a top free agent target. Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow publicly lobbied for Higgins’ return, offering to restructure his contract to help retain the receiver alongside Ja’Marr Chase. The Bengals, known for their reluctance to issue expensive long-term contracts, used the franchise tag to prevent Higgins from testing the open market.

Cincinnati faces several other major roster decisions that could impact its championship window. The team rebounded from a rough 4-8 start last season with five straight wins, showing flashes of its potential. Chase, who led the NFL in receptions, yards, and touchdowns, is also due for an extension. Defensive standout Trey Hendrickson, the league’s sack leader last season, could earn a new deal as well. Meanwhile, tight end Mike Gesicki is set to hit free agency.
