A competitor in the 2024 CrossFit Games died on Thursday during a swimming event in Texas, organizers announced. The CrossFit Games expressed their deep sadness over the incident and suspended the rest of Thursday’s events in Fort Worth.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Lazar Dukic, 28, of Serbia, as reported by NBC Dallas-Fort Worth. The cause of death has not been confirmed.

Emergency crews recovered Dukic’s body from Marine Creek Lake. The Fort Worth Fire Department initiated a search-and-rescue operation around 8 a.m. Thursday, using a boat, dive teams, and drones. The body was recovered about an hour later.

Fort Worth mayor Mattie Parker, in a statement, offered condolences and mentioned that grief counselors are available for anyone needing support following this “tragic loss.” Parker emphasized the city’s commitment to supporting the CrossFit community and ensuring a supportive environment for all involved.

The competition at Dickies Arena began Thursday and is scheduled to end Sunday, according to the event’s website. The CrossFit Games are known for bringing together world athletes to compete for the title of “Fittest on Earth.”
