Wicked star Cynthia Erivo has spoken out against a fan-edited version of the official movie poster for the highly anticipated Wicked musical from Universal Pictures. The altered poster, which hides Erivo’s eyes and much of her face to resemble the original Broadway poster, deeply offended the actress.

Erivo took to Instagram and X to express her frustration, explaining that the official poster, where she looks directly into the camera, was intended to connect with viewers without words. She emphasized that, unlike the Broadway poster, she is a real person, and editing her face felt like an attempt to “erase” her.

“Our poster is an homage, not an imitation,” Erivo wrote. “To edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me, and that is just deeply hurtful.” She further expressed her frustration by comparing the edit to other offensive things she has experienced, saying, “None of this is funny. None of it is cute. It degrades me. It degrades us.”

Erivo stars as Elphaba in the film adaptation of the Tony-winning musical Wicked, while Ariana Grande plays Glinda. The movie, directed by Jon M. Chu, is set to hit theaters on Nov. 22.
