The Dallas Mavericks have stunned the basketball world by landing the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft after defying 1.8% odds in Monday night’s lottery—a result that marks one of the most improbable lottery wins in league history. This gives them the prime position to select 18-year-old phenom Cooper Flagg, a standout forward from Duke University who’s long been considered the projected top pick.

Flagg reclassified in 2023 to become part of the 2024 draft class, and quickly solidified his top-prospect status. His breakout began with a strong showing for Team USA at the 2022 FIBA U17 World Cup where he helped secure a gold medal and earned All-Tournament honors. In 2024, he practiced with the USA Men’s National Team as a member of the USA Select Team in preparation for the Paris Olympics.

In his lone season at Duke, Flagg appeared in 37 games, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game while leading the Blue Devils to the Final Four. His mix of scoring, defense, and vision has NBA scouts widely aligned on his potential to reshape a franchise.

The Mavericks, who controversially traded Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, are looking to pair Flagg with a roster that already includes Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving. However, Irving is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in March, putting his return timeline in question.

Rounding out the top five in the lottery are the San Antonio Spurs, Philadelphia 76ers, Charlotte Hornets, and Utah Jazz. Notably, the Washington Wizards and New Orleans Pelicans—who held the best and second-best odds, respectively—slipped to sixth and seventh.

The draft’s first round will take place on June 25, followed by the second round on June 26. This year, only 59 players will be drafted instead of the standard 60 due to the New York Knicks’ forfeiture of a second-round pick for violating tampering rules in the Jalen Brunson signing.
