WNBA star Dearica Hamby has filed a federal lawsuit against the Las Vegas Aces, claiming the team discriminated against her after she disclosed her pregnancy. The suit also names the WNBA, alleging it failed to adequately punish the team after investigating her claims last year.

Hamby, a three-time All-Star and Olympian, asserts that after she informed the Aces’ staff of her pregnancy in August 2022, the team’s treatment toward her changed. She alleges that the team did not honor her contract by failing to pay her daughter’s school tuition and asking her to leave team-provided housing without explanation.

Hamby played for the Las Vegas Aces (formerly the San Antonio Stars) from 2015 to 2022.

In January, Aces Head Coach Becky Hammon allegedly questioned Hamby’s commitment and suggested she had signed her contract extension knowing she was pregnant, which Hamby denies. The following day, Hammon informed Hamby that she would be traded. The trade to the Los Angeles Sparks was announced five days later.

Hamby’s lawsuit also accuses the Aces of retaliation, including attempting to obtain her medical records and excluding her from a White House invitation after the team’s championship win.

The WNBA investigated Hamby’s claims, concluding the Aces violated league rules and penalizing the team by rescinding a draft pick and suspending Hammon for two games. However, Hamby’s suit contends that the league did not address clear violations of anti-discrimination laws.
