The police officer who arrested world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler has a lengthy disciplinary record, including suspensions, according to employment records revealed on Thursday.

Detective Bryan Gillis detained Scheffler a week ago at Valhalla Golf Club during a police investigation of a nearby fatal accident. Scheffler claims he followed police directions to enter the club, but arresting officers stated he did not comply.

Complicating the situation, city officials noted that Detective Gillis did not activate his body camera when encountering Scheffler. The only available footage comes from a squad car dashboard camera and a roadside pole, neither clearly showing the events leading to Scheffler’s handcuffing.

Disciplinary Record of Officer Who Arrested Scottie Scheffler Raises Concerns
Scottie Scheffler waves on the ninth green during the second round of the 2024 PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky, on May 17.

The Louisville Metro Police Department released the footage and Gillis’ personnel records. Gillis was suspended for five days in 2013 for “conduct unbecoming” after driving an intoxicated civilian and doing “donuts” in a business parking lot, as detailed in a memo by then-Chief Steve Conrad.

In 2021, he was disciplined for pursuing a vehicle without a violent felony or warrant, as stated in a memo by then-Chief Erika Shields. Gillis also received reprimands for being “at fault” in accidents on May 22, 2021, August 6, 2019, and December 1, 2013.

Despite these issues, Gillis was commended for his exceptional performance in a “high-intensity traffic enforcement detail” in 2021, issuing 108 citations out of 201 during a four-hour period.

A representative of the River City Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 614, which represents LMPD detectives, was unavailable for comment on Thursday.
