Ed Sheeran has announced that he will be relocating to America. The 32-year-old British singer-songwriter indicated this news while participating in The 2 Johnnies Podcast, when he jokingly said, “I might be the only person going to America,” referring to the current political climate and issues relating to immigration enforcement.

When asked why he is relocating, Sheeran indicated it was due to the length of his upcoming tour in America. He does not want to go “in and out” of spending time with his family. Thus, he is moving to America with his wife Cherry Seaborn and two daughters, and he wants to be there for his tour. Sheeran has not yet announced a full U.S. tour list, although he has been indicated to be a performer at the iHeartRadio music festival in Las Vegas, September 20.

A New Chapter for the Pop Star

Sheeran’s move comes right before the release of his next studio album, Play, set to be released September 12. To make the assumption that this album could lead to a larger tour across North America is an easy inference, again, Sheeran’s official tour page does not indicate any additional U.S. shows for him yet.

Sheeran is widely recognized and has made a career out of popular singles on the charts, such as “Shape of You” or “Perfect.” Over the last decade he has been a global touring artist regularly. In fact, his last tour broke attendance records globally, so there is certainly excitement for a followup – and yet another wave – with the promotional rollout of his next album.

There are certainly logistical motivations for the time and money of a move, but the end result shows priority. “I can’t be away from them for that long,” he said, referring to of course, his family. So as Sheeran embarks into the next chapter of his career, he decides to keep them close; on the stage and off.
