Elon Musk’s platform, X, has resumed operations in Brazil after a lengthy standoff with the country’s Supreme Court. The suspension, enforced on August 31, was lifted after X complied with court orders to ban certain user accounts and remove content deemed illegal by the Brazilian government. Initially, Musk resisted the court’s demands and closed X’s Brazilian office, even mocking Supreme Court minister Alexandre de Moraes. However, pressure from investors eventually led to compliance.

Brazil’s internet laws aim to curb hate speech, incitements to violence, and political misinformation, requiring platforms like X to have a legal representative in the country. During X’s suspension, competitors like Bluesky and Threads gained millions of users. On Tuesday, Brazil’s Supreme Court confirmed that X had fulfilled the necessary conditions, allowing Brazilians to regain access to the platform.
