Authorities captured an escaped California inmate accused of attempted murder in Los Angeles on Monday.

Deshaun Stamps, 29, from Riverside, escaped from the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga just before 12:30 p.m. Sunday, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department stated.

Stamps fled during an outside recreation period.

He was found in Los Angeles on Monday and taken into custody by the Los Angeles Police Department, which is collaborating with the sheriff’s office to transfer him back.

In custody since January 30, 2023, on an attempted murder charge, Stamps was attending hearings ahead of a potential trial, and as of Monday afternoon, he had not been located.

On Sunday, deputies at the West Valley Detention Center in San Bernardino, California, discovered that inmate Deshaun Stamps had escaped.

Charged in November 2022 with attempted murder, assault with a firearm on a peace officer, attempting to remove a peace officer’s firearm, resisting arrest, and misdemeanor vandalism, according to The Sun newspaper of San Bernardino, it was unclear if he had entered a plea.

A judge questioned Stamps’ mental competency for trial and ordered a psychiatric evaluation on Wednesday. Criminal proceedings were suspended, and Stamps was set to return to court on Aug. 14 for a hearing on the evaluation results, as reported by the newspaper.
