Civil rights attorney Ben Crump is demanding the release of dash and body camera footage from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol following the October death of Tyrone Mason, a 31-year-old Black man killed in a single-vehicle crash. Questions about the case intensified after nearly 200 cases involving Trooper Garrett Macario, who responded to the accident, were dropped by the Wake County district attorney’s office in January.

Crump, representing Mason’s mother, Henrietta Mason, insists authorities are withholding critical details. District Attorney Lorrin Freeman placed Macario and his supervisor, Sgt. Matthew Morrison, on leave after the State Bureau of Investigation urged further review of the case. Freeman has not released the footage but stated that what she saw warranted deeper scrutiny, emphasizing the importance of law enforcement credibility.

Crump argues that authorities would not have dismissed so many cases unless the footage contained damning evidence. “Just show the video,” he said. Henrietta Mason maintains her son was being pursued when he crashed. “I told them that is not true—someone had to be chasing my son.” Records show Macario has been with the patrol since 2019 and Morrison since 2012.
