A fan who shouted a cruel remark about the late mother of Arizona Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte during a game in Chicago has been banned indefinitely from all Major League Baseball stadiums, both by the Chicago White Sox and MLB itself. The incident, which took place Tuesday at Guaranteed Rate Field, left Marte visibly emotional on the field, and he had to be comforted by his manager, Torey Lovullo.

Marte lost his mother in a tragic car accident in 2017. The remark, which referenced her death in an insulting way, quickly drew widespread condemnation. Security ejected the 22-year-old man involved, and according to MLB.com, he expressed remorse afterward, acknowledging that his comment was inappropriate and crossing a line.

Despite the apology, the league and the White Sox took decisive action, jointly banning the individual from all MLB venues going forward. The swift response underscores MLB’s zero-tolerance stance toward personal attacks and abusive fan behavior.

In a gesture of solidarity, the White Sox displayed messages of support during the following game, flashing statements such as “Baseball is family” and “The White Sox community supports Ketel Marte” across stadium boards. The moment served as a reminder that, even in a fiercely competitive sport, dignity and empathy still matter.
