Sophie Nyweide, the former child actor known for starring in Mammoth alongside Gael García Bernal and Michelle Williams, was pregnant when she died on April 14 at age 24, according to a death certificate from the Vermont Department of Health. Her body was found in a wooded area in Bennington, about 25 miles from her home in Manchester Center. The cause of death remains under investigation.

Nyweide, whose last acting credit was 2014’s Noah with Russell Crowe and Emma Watson, had struggled privately, according to an obituary published April 17 and later removed. It described her as someone who self-medicated to cope with “trauma and shame,” ultimately rejecting treatment that may have saved her. Her journals and drawings reportedly documented both her creativity and her pain.

Born in Burlington, Vermont in 2000, Nyweide lived between her home state and New York City. She was a competitive snowboarder by age five and later found a sense of safety and purpose on film sets. The obituary remembered her as a passionate traveler, a lover of languages and culture, and someone deeply cherished by family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family encouraged donations in her name to RAINN, the country’s largest anti-sexual assault nonprofit. “Sophie. A life ended too soon,” the obituary concluded. “May it not be in vain. May we all learn from her brief life on earth and do better.”
