A Miramar handbag theft case has led to a $150,000 bond for a suspect after police arrested the wrong man. Shaquille Jaray Palmer, 33, appeared before a judge Saturday morning on a felony grand theft charge.

Palmer was taken into custody Friday night, according to Hoodline’s account of the case. Police had previously arrested Shaquille Grant, 31, on September 30, then released Grant after discovering the mistaken identity.

Handbag Theft Allegations Follow A Cleaning Arrangement

The handbag theft complaint came from South Florida social media influencer Coach Stormy Wellington. Miramar Police records cited by CBS News described missing Hermès Birkin bags and Chanel merchandise.

Wellington reported five Hermès Birkin bags missing, including one valued at $47,650. The listed property amounted to an estimated $187,360, according to those records.

Police documents in the handbag theft case, relayed by Local 10 News, said Palmer had known Wellington for seven years. Wellington trusted Palmer to take handbags for professional cleaning.

Instead, Local 10 News reported, Palmer allegedly used the bags as collateral for a loan at an Aventura luxury resale business. The station said Palmer later defaulted on that debt.

These are allegations in the handbag theft investigation. The reported court appearance and bond do not establish that Palmer committed the alleged offenses.

A Social Media Post Led To The Resale Shop

Wellington posted details about the missing bags on social media. That post led Wellington to the Aventura shop, according to police filings cited by CBS News.

Staff there confirmed Palmer had brought the items in as loan collateral, the filings said. Investigators subsequently questioned Palmer about the missing property.

Palmer said two batches of bags had been taken for servicing and four had been returned. CBS News reported that Palmer did not provide a timeline for returning the remaining bags.

Palmer then refused further questions about pawning the bags without an attorney present, according to the arrest records. WSVN separately reported that investigators accused Palmer of taking more than $150,000 in handbags.

Police Chief Explains The Mistaken Arrest

Miramar Police Chief Delrish Moss said investigators issued an arrest warrant using the wrong name. Moss attributed the error to shared first names and misdirected information, Local 10 News reported.

WSVN reported that Palmer gave investigators a different last name. Grant was arrested for grand theft on September 30 and released when police recognized the identity mistake.

Additional Reports Raised The Property Estimate

Local 10 News reported that Wellington later filed supplemental police reports. Those listed two additional Chanel bags and an expensive Versace dress as missing.

Reported property losses in the handbag theft case reached estimates as high as $271,938. The estimate differs from the $187,360 property total cited in the CBS News account.

Hoodline cited Florida law classifying grand theft of property worth $100,000 or more as a first-degree felony. Maximum penalties include up to 30 years in prison and fines of up to $10,000.

The report said it remains unclear whether Grant plans to pursue a legal remedy over the wrongful arrest. Palmer remains held on the reported $150,000 bond following Saturday’s court appearance.
