A woman died after an SUV was stolen from a hospital and crashed into the U.S. attorney’s office building in downtown Washington, D.C., police reported Monday.

The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, was in the vehicle at MedStar Washington Hospital Center when another woman got in and drove away, according to Assistant Washington Police Chief Darnel Robinson at a media briefing.

The incident occurred around 1:11 p.m. Monday. Police said in a post on X that an “elderly parent” was reported to be inside the SUV at the time.

The SUV crashed into the U.S. attorney’s office building at 6th and D streets NW. A nearby patrol officer witnessed the crash and detained the driver as she tried to flee, Robinson said.

The driver’s identity has not been released. Investigators are determining if the driver knew the victim was inside and if the vehicle was running when stolen. Potential charges will be considered in consultation with the U.S. attorney’s office.

Carjackings more than doubled in the nation’s capital last year, according to NBC Washington. This year, carjackings are down 33% compared to the same period last year, police data shows.
