Kevin Spacey states he is currently living out of suitcases, as he waits for an opportunity to rebuild a career that has been rapidly declining for nearly ten years. In a lengthy interview with The Telegraph, Spacey describes a difficult economic situation, stating things are “not great,” without directly referring to himself as “homeless.”

Spacey explained he travels to different hotels, and short term rentals, and frequently to whichever country will allow him to perform, or speak. As of now, this is Cyprus. He performs classic standards at a local nightclub there, which is a far cry from the spotlight of Hollywood he once dominated.

As for why he is no longer working in Hollywood, it is largely due to allegations he made towards then fourteen year old actor Anthony Rapp. In the summer of 2017, Rapp stated to BuzzFeed News that Spacey had made a sexual advance toward him in 1986, when Rapp was only 14, and Spacey was 26. The civil jury ultimately ruled in Spacey’s favor; however, the claim triggered other allegations against him. This effectively halted his career in Hollywood.

From peak to bottom, a fall in Hollywood

Kevin Spacey was the lead for hit series, ‘House of Cards’.

Since then, Spacey has admitted to instances of being “too handsy,” although he maintains he did not realize his actions were unwelcome at the time. The allegations surfaced during America’s Me Too movement, at the same time that Spacey was playing the lead role in the successful television show “House of Cards”. He was subsequently let go and, since then, large parts have been difficult for him to obtain.

Spacey likened his present situation to the blacklisting in Hollywood, and the greater pressure of the Red Scare. He mentioned the moment when Kirk Douglas supported the writer Dalton Trumbo and wanted his name to be credited for Spartacus, which ultimately ended the blacklisting. Spacey is hoping that it will simply require the backing of an influential individual to get back into mainstream work.

Spacey said that if he received a phone call from directors like Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino, he believed he would be “hugely honored” to receive such a call, and is hopeful that such a phone call will occur at some point.

Legal ramifications, and the road ahead

To date, no civil or criminal court has found Spacey guilty of sexually abusing anyone. On July 23, 2023, he was acquitted in a London court, according to reports from news outlets including Sky News. In 2019, Massachusetts prosecutors decided to drop their own case against Spacey, after they were informed that texts on the phone of the accuser may have been deleted, as reported by the Associated Press.

When reporting on Spacey’s current performance in Cyprus, The Telegraph noted that at least some attendees of the performance are unbothered by the accusations against him. One of the attendees reportedly expressed that “he was acquitted. Doesn’t that count?”

It appears that Spacey believes time, determination, and the support of a powerful individual will ultimately result in redemption. Until that happens, he continues to travel, continue to perform, and continue to wait for the day he receives another opportunity to work in Hollywood.
