Jameelah Elena Michl, who pleaded guilty to killing entertainment consultant and social justice advocate Michael Latt, received a 35-year to life prison sentence on Wednesday.

Michl had been stalking and threatening film director A.V. Rockwell and targeted Latt because he was Rockwell’s friend. She pleaded guilty last month to first-degree murder and first-degree burglary in connection with the November attack.

Latt, a consultant focusing on social impact in film, worked with notable directors such as Ava DuVernay and Ryan Coogler. His death deeply affected Hollywood, with many mourning his loss.

Prosecutors said Michl forced her way into Latt’s Los Angeles home on Nov. 27, 2023, and fatally shot him with a semi-automatic handgun. Latt was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Latt’s mother, Michelle Satter, received an honorary Oscar weeks later, and the ceremony became a tribute to her son. Coogler, presenting the award, called Latt Satter’s “greatest gift to the world.”

Michl’s public defender, Kimberly Wong, read a statement expressing Michl’s remorse and acknowledgment of her actions. Wong noted Michl’s struggles with homelessness and trauma at the time of the incident and her hope that her guilty plea would aid in the healing process.

Wong declined further comment on the case.
