Over the weekend, rapper Macklemore’s Seattle home was invaded by masked intruders who assaulted the nanny with bear spray, according to police.

At 12:48 a.m. Saturday, Seattle police responded to a call from a woman identifying herself as the nanny. She reported that two masked men had broken into the residence. Although she managed to escape, she informed authorities that three children remained inside the house.

While the police report didn’t name the homeowner, it described the residence as belonging to a “high-profile individual.” The address listed closely matched that associated with Macklemore’s voter registration, as reported by the Seattle Times. Additionally, part of the document left visible the surname “Davis,” which is also the last name of Macklemore’s wife.

It’s unknown whether Macklemore, whose real name is Ben Haggerty, was present during the break-in. His schedule included performances in Ireland on June 4 and 5.

According to the nanny, the break-in occurred shortly after she put the children to bed on the second floor. She was on the main level when she saw two men come in through a patio door. Both wore dark clothing, masks, gloves, and what looked like tactical vests. They carried cans of bear spray.

One of the men, who was taller, told the other to “spray her,” which he did, she told police. She added that after spraying her, the shorter man appeared to have a moment of hesitation and attempted to wipe her face, leading her to believe she saw fear in his eyes.

The taller intruder then shouted, “Where are the jewels?” prompting the nanny to direct them toward the primary bedroom. There, they rummaged through drawers, closets, and cabinets. She reported that they filled bags with watches, jewelry, and shoes.

Throughout the encounter, the men ordered her to keep her hands up and her face pointed toward a mirror. The shorter man at one point shoved her to the floor, pressed his boot on her ankle, then the back of her neck, and confiscated her phone.

She began to scream, but the shorter suspect pinned her against a wall and covered her mouth. Though nearly blind from the bear spray, she attempted to kick him, then bit his hand, which caused him to let go. She fled the home and knocked on several neighbors’ doors until someone finally let her in to call police.

By the time officers arrived, the suspects had vanished. Police cleared the home and removed the children safely. Family members later took the children to another location.

A passerby told one officer they saw a man dressed in all black sprinting west through backyards north of the property.
