A man lost his life during a tragic hot air balloon accident at a festival in Zacatecas, Mexico, according to local authorities.

Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, the state’s secretary general of government, confirmed the fatality occurred during the “First Balloon Festival.” In a translated Facebook post on Sunday, Mugüerza stated that emergency services responded immediately to assist those affected. He added that the State Prosecutor’s Office has been tasked with conducting a full investigation to determine what happened and who may be responsible.

The incident also left two others injured, according to a separate Facebook post by Zacatecas’ Attorney General’s Office. Authorities noted that two event organizers initially fled the scene but have since been detained for questioning as part of the ongoing inquiry.

According to Riviera Maya News, the disaster unfolded just after 8 a.m. local time, as three people prepared for launch. The hot air balloon was still grounded with two others nearby when a fire broke out in the basket. Despite the flame, the balloon detached from its tether and began to rise.

The man managed to help his two companions escape the basket, but he became caught in a rope as the balloon ascended. Witnesses reported seeing him suspended in midair before he ultimately fell to his death.
