Miami Beach Enacts Emergency Curfew Amid Spring Break Crackdown

In response to an influx of spring break crowds and a commitment to protecting public safety, Miami Beach has implemented a weekend curfew from 11:59 p.m. on Friday until Monday at 6 a.m. for a significant portion of South Beach.

City Manager’s Decision

Miami Beach City Manager Alina Hudak enacted discretionary emergency measures for up to 72 hours, unless extended by the Miami Beach City Commission. Hudak emphasized the necessity of a midnight curfew in maintaining public safety during the Spring Break weekend, citing concerns over past incidents.

Resolution Endorsement and Cautionary Measures

Last year, the city commission endorsed Miami Beach’s intention to establish a spring break-related curfew. City leaders have warned local businesses to anticipate curfews, particularly over the historically tumultuous March 16-17 weekend in South Beach.

Emergency Measures

Several emergency measures have been imposed, including:

  • A curfew in the designated area from March 15 to March 18, from 11:59 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Strict enforcement by public safety officers to ensure compliance.
  • Limited operation of businesses for delivery services only during curfew hours.
  • Prohibition of off-premises sale or distribution of alcoholic beverages after 6 p.m. each day within the curfew area.

Special Event Zone

Miami Beach officials have established a Special Event Zone covering specific boundaries from 8 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Monday. This zone includes Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue, Washington Avenue, and adjacent side streets. Double fines for traffic infractions and vehicle impoundment for violations will be enforced within this area.
