Niall Horan paid tribute to his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne after Payne’s tragic death at 31. Horan expressed his heartbreak, saying, “I feel so fortunate that I got to see him recently. After hugging him that night, I never thought it would be the last time.”

The band members—Horan, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson—released a joint statement before individually sharing their grief. Horan described Payne as someone with an infectious passion for life, who made people feel secure and happy. He reflected on their memories together, cherishing the bond they shared, which he said is rare. “It’s heartbreaking,” Horan wrote, sending love to Payne’s family, including his son Bear.

Payne died in Buenos Aires after falling from a hotel balcony. Police reports suggested Payne had jumped and may have been under the influence. Doctors confirmed his death due to severe trauma and hemorrhaging.

Harry Styles expressed devastation, remembering Payne’s energy and how he lived with his heart on his sleeve. “Liam’s greatest joy was making others happy,” he said, and noted that their years together would remain some of the most cherished in his life.

Louis Tomlinson, heartbroken over losing Payne, spoke of their writing chemistry and shared his struggles in saying goodbye. He promised to be there for Payne’s son, Bear, and reflected on their deepening friendship since the band’s hiatus.

Zayn Malik also paid tribute, recalling how Payne supported him through difficult times. He shared his grief at not having more conversations with him, calling Payne headstrong and deeply respected, despite their occasional clashes. “I lost a brother,” he said, wishing for a final hug and a chance to properly say goodbye.

The band, formed on the U.K.’s X-Factor in 2010, became one of the most successful boy bands of all time, with hits like “What Makes You Beautiful” and “Story of My Life.” They released five albums before going on hiatus in 2016 after Malik’s departure.
