Nick Reiner’s case turned in dramatic fashion in court yesterday when his attorney suddenly dropped him prior to the arraignment hearing and it triggered an immediate postponement of what already has been one of the most scrutinized cases in recent memory.

Jackson stated in open court he was withdrawing as counsel of record in advance of yesterday’s hearing, and would be unable to continue representing Reiner. Following this announcement, Ms. Greene, a Los Angeles County public defender, stepped forward to represent Mr. Reiner at the hearing and requested the hearing be postponed until February 23. The judge granted her request and continued the hearing until then.

Los Angeles prosecutors have charged Nick Reiner with two counts of First Degree Murder stemming from the death of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and photojournalist and producer Michelle Singer Reiner, who died December 14th.

A representative of the family stated they fully support the legal process and have no additional comments at this time regarding the case.

Reiner currently is being held without bail according to jail records. If convicted, he faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison, either by way of life without the possibility of parole or by way of capital punishment pursuant to California law.

According to investigators, Rob Reiner, 78 years old, and Michelle Singer Reiner, 70 years old, were found deceased in the master bedroom of their Brentwood residence. According to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, the manner of death was caused by multiple stab wounds.

On the same day the bodies of Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer Reiner were discovered, police apprehended Nick Reiner in connection with these crimes without incident near the University of Southern California. At present, authorities have declined to identify a motive for the alleged murders and have offered little detail regarding the events leading up to the death of the couple.

In addition to urging the public to refrain from jumping to conclusions and to exercise restraint and respect for the legal system and the victim’s family, Jackson asked the public to avoid speculating on the matter further.

Nick Reiner previously spoke about his past issues with addiction and instability in his life. He reported experiencing multiple instances of homelessness and numerous times he was required to check into a rehabilitation center during his teenage years. In fact, his experiences with addiction and homelessness are the basis for his 2016 film “Being Charlie,” which he wrote and starred in. His father Rob Reiner, directed the film.

Following the tragic loss of their parents, Nick Reiner’s two siblings made a public plea for people to show compassion and humanity and to temper speculation concerning their family members’ deaths, noting their parents were not only their relatives, but also their best friends.
