A Pennsylvania jury has convicted Dauphin County magisterial judge Sonya McKnight of attempted murder and aggravated assault for shooting her boyfriend, Michael McCoy, in the head while he slept in February 2024. According to the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office, the shooting occurred at McKnight’s home in Harrisburg after McCoy attempted to end their relationship.

McCoy told investigators he had been asleep for one to two hours when he awoke with severe head pain and vision loss. He later told police he hadn’t shot himself, contradicting McKnight, who allegedly tried to convince him otherwise. McCoy survived the attack but is now blind in one eye.

During the trial, McKnight’s defense argued that gunpowder residue was found on McCoy’s hands, suggesting he may have pulled the trigger himself, according to NBC affiliate WGAL. Jurors deliberated for about two hours following two days of testimony.

McKnight, who had been suspended from the bench since her arrest, was taken into custody after her bail was raised to $3 million. Her sentencing is scheduled for May.
