Police in New York City are investigating a disturbing matter where a newborn girl was discovered abandoned in the busy subway complex at 34th Street-Penn Station during the rush hour on Monday morning. The infant was found in a blanket with her umbilical cord attached by a heavily-travelled passageway underneath Madison Square Garden.

The Penn Station means of transportation is one of the busiest in the country and caters to thousands of commuters each day through Amtrak, MTA and NJ Transit. The timing of this discovery during peak travel should have aided in the infant’s early discovery.

Woman Seen on Surveillance Footage

Police Seek Woman After Newborn Found Abandoned at Penn Station
The image shows a woman holding something which appears to be a child.

A woman is depicted in an early part of some surveillance footage. The NYPD released a brief segment of this video on Tuesday, claiming it contained footage of a woman walking down a city sidewalk carrying what appears to be a bundled object. The police think this woman is probably the one responsible for placing the infant at the scene and have requested public assistance in trying to identify her. They are treating the event at present as pertaining to the endangerment of welfare to a child.

The woman in the footage appears to be carrying the object in such a manner that it may resemble the way a child may be carried. While the nature of the footage is brief, it has not prevented police from believing that a person may find it possible either to identify her or to remember clothing worn by her.

Baby in Stable Condition

The infant was speedily taken to a nearby hospital for examination and is now reported to be in a stable condition, according to the NYPD. The Administration for Children’s Services reported that a team had been sent to supervise the child’s care and education, and to watch over her welfare.

Anyone with information concerning this matter is requested to consult the Crime Stoppers of the NYPD or to send a communication to the police department’s official web site. The investigation is continuing.
