The armorer convicted in the fatal “Rust” shooting has been released from prison following her 18-month sentence for involuntary manslaughter. Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, tasked with managing weapons on set, was released Friday morning, according to a New Mexico Corrections Department spokesperson.

Her release took place in Arizona, where she is now under dual supervision by both probation and parole officers, as confirmed by spokesperson Brittany Roembach. Gutierrez-Reed, who was 26 at the time of her conviction, had been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in March 2024 by a New Mexico jury. She was acquitted on a separate charge of evidence tampering.

In April, she was sentenced to serve the maximum 18-month term and was held at the Western New Mexico Correctional Facility in Grants. However, New Mexico’s credit system typically allows women to serve around 60% of their sentence, though it remains unclear if that specifically applied to her case.

Alec Baldwin on ‘Rust’ (2024).

The deadly 2021 incident occurred while actor Alec Baldwin was rehearsing a scene at the Bonanza Creek Ranch in Santa Fe County, New Mexico. The prop revolver he held discharged a live round, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. Baldwin had not known the gun contained live ammunition.

Gutierrez-Reed pleaded not guilty and contested the charge in court. During her trial, special prosecutor Kari T. Morrissey described her as “negligent, careless, and thoughtless.” Souza echoed those concerns, testifying that multiple failures occurred on set regarding the weapons and blanks under her supervision.

Her father, Thell Reed, is a well-known armorer in the film industry, a detail that drew added attention to the case. The film itself, starring and produced by Baldwin, was released earlier this month, over three years after the tragedy halted production.

Baldwin faced his own legal battles as well. Prosecutors twice brought involuntary manslaughter charges against him. The first round was dropped in April 2023. In the second instance, a judge dismissed the case with prejudice after determining that the prosecution had withheld potentially exculpatory evidence. Baldwin, who had denied any wrongdoing, was visibly emotional in court when the case was thrown out.
