Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders was not selected in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday, despite being one of the most talked-about prospects this year. Though some projections had him going as high as third overall—or to the Pittsburgh Steelers at pick 21—he ultimately fell out of the first round. The Steelers chose Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon instead.

Only two quarterbacks were taken in the first round: No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward and Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart, who was selected by the Giants at 25 after a trade.

Sanders, son of NFL Hall of Famer and Colorado coach Deion Sanders, was the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, completing 74% of his passes for 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season. After starting his college career at Jackson State, he transferred to Colorado with his father, helping the Buffaloes go from a one-win team to a nine-win program in just two years.

Ahead of the draft, Sanders drew criticism from scouts and coaches, with some questioning his attitude and performance. One assistant coach called him “entitled” and said he delivered “the worst formal interview” they’d seen, criticizing his body language and tendency to take sacks—94 in two seasons.

Despite this, Sanders’ supporters have praised his accuracy, with a completion rate above 70% in both seasons at Colorado. Responding to the criticism, Sanders told NBC News, “I truly don’t have any space for negativity… I wouldn’t change a thing, because this adds to the story.”
