The 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner appears to have died from asphyxiation, possibly after ingesting contaminated food during a family vacation in Costa Rica, officials said Monday.

Miller Gardner was found dead Friday in a hotel room in Manuel Antonio, a Pacific Coast resort area, according to Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia of Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency. Authorities believe his death may be linked to food-related intoxication, but the cause remains preliminary pending autopsy and toxicology results.

In a statement released Sunday, Miller’s parents said he died peacefully in his sleep after falling ill alongside other family members. “Miller was a beloved son and brother and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile,” they wrote, describing his love for football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, and time spent with friends and family.

Brett Gardner played his entire 14-season career with the Yankees, helping the team win the World Series in 2009 after making his MLB debut the previous year.
