A Dallas-area influencer is fighting to reclaim her spider monkey, Jorgie Boy, after authorities confiscated the animal following a drunk driving incident. The monkey, suffering from rickets—a bone disease caused by malnutrition—was taken to a wildlife sanctuary after the crash.

Police removed Jorgie Boy from Brandi Botello’s custody on Saturday after responding to a single-vehicle accident. Botello, who claims she wasn’t driving, was charged with driving while intoxicated. She told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth she was intoxicated and asleep in the passenger seat during the crash. Afterward, she moved to the driver’s seat, leading to confusion about who was behind the wheel. Botello alleged the actual driver was a male acquaintance who faced a public intoxication charge. Fortunately, neither the passengers nor Jorgie Boy were seriously hurt.

Transferred to Irving’s animal control, the monkey was later diagnosed with rickets. Dallas Morning News reported that Jorgie Boy weighed only six pounds—less than half the average weight for a spider monkey—and had bone fractures and elevated organ levels. He is currently being treated at a sanctuary identified as Funky Monkey Ranch, which has stated it will not return Jorgie Boy to Botello.

Botello, an influencer with 43,000 Instagram followers, has been campaigning to get Jorgie Boy back using the hashtag #FreeJorgieBoy. In emotional Instagram posts, she expressed her despair and pledged to change for Jorgie Boy, whom she considers her world. She also emphasized her belief that she’s a good caretaker despite the incident.

Jorgie Boy, with his own Instagram following of 6,000, has been featured in photos wearing pajamas, taking baths, and dressing up with Botello, who even has his name tattooed on her back. Despite Botello’s plea, local regulations in Irving prohibit owning wild animals, and the sanctuary appears firm in its decision to retain custody of the monkey.

The case follows another high-profile exotic pet controversy involving Peanut, an Instagram-famous squirrel, which authorities seized and euthanized for being illegally kept as a pet.
