During their initial court appearance on Monday morning, a judge refused bail for the three suspects charged with the murder of 10-year-old Geanna Bradley in Honolulu. Bradley’s legal guardians, Brandy Blas, Thomas Blas, and Debra Geron, faced charges including second-degree murder, kidnapping, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and unlawful imprisonment.

Defense Requests Bail for Brandy Blas

Brandy Blas’ attorney argued for her release during the court proceedings, citing her pregnancy and the need for continued medical care. The attorney emphasized the importance of her seeing her primary care physician for optimal treatment.

“It’s important she’d go and meet with her primary care physician just because they have the ability to treat her at OCCC doesn’t mean they can provide the best care and the best care would be with the doctor she’s currently seeing,” stated the attorney.

Judge Denies Bail Request

In response to the defense’s request, the judge denied bail for Brandy Blas, setting it at $500,000. Geanna Bradley was discovered deceased on Thursday morning, January 18. Initially classified as an unattended death, the case was later identified as murder after significant injuries and bruising were observed on the girl’s body.

Guardians’ Financial Support from State Revealed

Court documents revealed that the guardians were receiving $1,961 per month from the State of Hawaii for Geanna. Representative Lisa Marten (D), Chair of the House Committee of Housing, highlighted previous attempts to legislate follow-ups on financial support after adoption or legal guardianship.

“I tried to introduce legislation two years ago, to require a follow-up to go with the money after adoption or legal guardianship, and I was completely shut down, it goes against our constitution,” explained Rep. Marten.

Concerns Raised About Biological and Adoptive Children

The Blas’ have four biological children and are the adoptive parents of a 4-year-old boy who investigators noted was ‘very thin’ and had injuries to both arms. All five children were removed from their homes by Child Welfare Services as part of an ongoing investigation. The suspects are being held without bail.
