Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa sustained a concussion during Thursday’s 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills. In the third quarter, after a fourth-down run, Tagovailoa collided head-first with Bills safety Damar Hamlin. Teammates immediately called for medical attention, but Tagovailoa walked off the field on his own.

Tagovailoa’s wife and children met him in the locker room, where he remained conscious and alert. This incident marks another serious head injury for Tagovailoa, who suffered two concussions in 2022. His first concussion last year, in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals, led to significant controversy over how the NFL handled his evaluation. The NFL Players Association eventually fired an independent neurotrauma consultant involved in clearing him to play.

Tagovailoa had considered retirement after his 2022 concussions but chose to continue after consulting with a doctor, as he explained to Dan Le Batard. In his fifth season with the Dolphins, Tagovailoa signed a four-year, $212.4 million contract in July.

Backup quarterback Skylar Thompson replaced him after the injury, expressing concern for his teammate, saying, “You care about the person more than the player.”
