Alijah Arenas, an 18-year-old top basketball recruit and son of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas, was hospitalized early Thursday after crashing a Tesla Cybertruck in Los Angeles. According to the LAPD, the vehicle struck a tree and fire hydrant around 5 a.m. The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed he was transported in serious condition and, according to a source familiar with the situation, he is currently in an induced coma due to smoke inhalation.

Police are investigating whether speed was a factor, though there’s no immediate evidence that alcohol played a role. Photos from the scene show the silver Cybertruck mangled around a tree, its windshield crumpled and windows shattered. The car is registered to Gilbert Arenas through September, per California DMV records.

Alijah, who committed to USC earlier this year, also received offers from Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky, and Louisville. He currently attends Chatsworth High School in Los Angeles. Gilbert Arenas canceled his show on Thursday, and Alijah’s mother, Laura Govan, requested prayers in an Instagram post. USC and the Arenas family have not released official statements.
