A Utah State University football player, set to join the team this fall, was found dead Saturday following an apparent cliff-diving accident, the school confirmed.

The university identified the player as Andre Seldon Jr., a recent transfer from New Mexico State University. He played two seasons under Nate Dreiling, now Utah State’s interim head coach.

Dreiling expressed heartbreak over the loss, saying, “Having had a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss.”

The Cache County Sheriff’s Office in Logan, Utah, received reports of a possible drowning at Porcupine Dam on Saturday afternoon. Witnesses said a young man did not resurface after diving into the reservoir from a cliff. Dive teams found him just after 9 p.m., about seven hours after the initial report. The sheriff’s office confirmed the man was a Utah State student-athlete but did not immediately release his identity.

“Our initial investigation leads us to believe this is a tragic accident as multiple witnesses recount the same information,” the sheriff’s office stated. “Our heartfelt condolences go to family and friends of the student athlete.”

The university announced it would provide emotional and mental support to students and staff in the athletics department following Seldon’s death.

Seldon began his college football career at the University of Michigan in 2020 before transferring as a redshirt freshman to New Mexico State. He graduated from Belleville High School in Michigan, where he played football and participated in track and field. At New Mexico State, he started 12 of 13 games in 2022, ranking fifth on the team for tackles.

New Mexico State and the University of Michigan both released statements on social media Sunday morning in tribute to Seldon.
