A co-defendant in Georgia’s longest-running criminal trial, rapper Deamonte Kendrick, known as Yak Gotti, was stabbed in jail while awaiting a verdict, according to his lawyer. The incident occurred in the Fulton County Jail’s south annex, where Kendrick was awaiting transport to a hospital for stitches. His lawyer, Douglas Weinstein, shared that Kendrick sounded tired but is expected to recover fully.

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Kendrick was involved in an altercation with another inmate and sustained minor injuries from a sharp object. The sheriff’s office is investigating to determine the aggressor and whether charges are warranted. The jail, under scrutiny for civil rights violations and dangerous conditions, is part of a federal investigation. Last year, over 300 stabbings were reported, many involving contraband weapons.

Jurors resumed deliberations on Monday in the racketeering case against Kendrick and co-defendant Shannon Stillwell under Georgia’s RICO statute. Originally involving 28 co-defendants, including Young Thug, the trial has been marked by delays, plea deals, and high-profile drama. Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, accepted a plea agreement, commuting his 40-year sentence to time served and probation.

Since its January 2023 start, the trial has faced numerous challenges, including judge removal, mistrial threats, and delays due to stabbings. Opening statements with six remaining co-defendants began in November 2023, but four have since taken plea deals. As the trial nears its conclusion, it remains one of Georgia’s most contentious legal sagas.
