YouTube tech influencer Marques Brownlee, who boasts nearly 20 million subscribers, apologized after being caught driving at 96 mph in a residential area with a 35 mph speed limit. The video, uploaded Tuesday, showed him speeding past a “children playing” sign while driving a Lamborghini.

In a post on X, Brownlee called his actions “inexcusable and dangerous” and admitted he cut the clip after viewers criticized its inclusion in a video sponsored by drone and camera company DJI. The sponsorship also drew scrutiny from fans, who felt the video prioritized profit over meaningful tech content.

DJI issued a statement distancing itself from Brownlee’s actions, emphasizing its commitment to safety and adherence to laws. Brownlee acknowledged the incident might invoke the “Streisand effect”—attracting more attention by attempting to remove it—but said cutting the clip was necessary to avoid normalizing unsafe behavior.

The controversy follows another recent backlash over Brownlee’s app for digital wallpapers, which drew complaints about its $11.99 monthly subscription cost. Fans accused him of prioritizing revenue over his platform’s original purpose of providing unbiased tech reviews. Despite these missteps, Brownlee remains one of the most influential voices in consumer tech, with a 16-year career shaping industry trends.
